Welcome

Hello 7th grade students and their parents!

Your child will be taking home economics this year. This course will cover a variety of exciting topics, only some of which include manners, self-esteem, childcare, cooking, and sewing. To inform you of some things: as part of the childcare section the students will be required to participate in the “Egg Baby” simulation where they will care for their “Egg Baby” over a 2-week period as they would a real baby for a grade. Topics of education during this section will involve discussion on the requirements it takes to be a good parent, issues parents face, as well as the cost involved in raising a child. More information will be given about this in the future. We also hope to educate the students on the basics of First Aid as part of this section.

As part of the cooking section, the students will spend class time in the kitchen learning various cooking techniques and making a variety of recipes. It will involve using knives and other tools with sharp blades, hot cookware and stoves/ovens, as well as the many foods used in the recipes. We would need to be made aware of any food allergies your child might have in advance. Due to these risks, we need permission from parents to allow your child to participate in this section of the course. Every attempt will be made to keep the students safe, including educating them prior to going into the kitchen on safety; however accidents do occur even with highly skilled chefs.

In the sewing/crafting sections of this course, students will be using objects such as needles, scissors, irons, sewing machines, hot glue guns, exposure to chemicals and other various things. We need your permission to permit your child to participate in this section of the course as well. If you have a sewing machine you would be willing to lend for a short time during this section, please let me know.

We are asking ALL students to bring in $20 to help cover the cost of the supplies they will be using throughout the course. If there are any problems, please let myself or the office know.

Please sign below for each of the sections your child has permission to participate in as discussed above. In the comments section below the signatures, it would be great if you would share information regarding your child, concerns, or questions you might have and I will be happy to discuss them with you.

We want to thank you for your help in these matters. We hope to have a FUN year getting to experiment and be creative!
